Carrera 4S: Best Everyday 911?

carrera-4s.jpgWhen going through the list of Porsche 911’s, one has many options to choose from, especially if your in the market for a daily driver and not a track ready Porsche such as the 911 GT2 or 911 GT3.  Although both of the latter 911’s are excellent city cars, I doubt many owners drive them five days a week. There are many Porsche owners and enthusiasts in the city I reside in which has always made me curious as to how people think through their decision making process. In Vancouver BC, I see Porsche’s from the entry level Carrera all the way up to Porsche’s supercar the Carrera GT. I’ve seen many 997 turbos, a few GT3’s and even a couple GT3 RS. However the 911 I see everywhere is the 997 Carrera 4s. I had to see for myself why this model seems to be a perfect fit for a Porsche client searching for overall well rounded performance.

porsche-carrera-4-s.jpgSince we do live by the mountains Vancouver does receive its fair share of snow throughout the winter season. With that said, the Carrera 4S does fit the bill given its intelligent all wheel drive system. Why not just buy the Carrera 4 then? The Carrera 4s has 355 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque compared to the Carrera 4 with 325 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The Carrera 4S also has a flat six 3.8 liter engine compared to the Carrera 4 with a 3.6 liter. Both top speeds are very similar with each Porsche. The suspension packages are also then same for both 911’s. However the 19 inch Carrera S style wheels comes standard on the Carrera 4S compared to the 18 inch Carrera III alloys that are standard on the Carrera 4.

porsche-carrera-4s.jpgThe other other option is the Carrera S. You’ll receive the same benefit without the intelligent all wheel drive system as the Carrera 4S. Not only does the Carrera 4S offer exceptional road handling in the corners but also great traction in the rain. Anyone from Vancouver would tell you were never short of rain. With not much difference in price I can see why Porsche lovers settle with the Carrera 4S. It really seems to be the best well rounded 997 that Porsche has to offer given the price tag. Whats your thoughts?
